In August of 2019, Norwich University will celebrate 200 years of educating leaders! As we begin the countdown to this amazing milestone and have kicked off the final year of our bicentennial celebration with the Year of Distinction, we wanted to share some of the latest news tied to the Bicentennial Campaign.
Mack Hall Opens
On Thursday, September 13th, Norwich University officially dedicated its newest academic building—Mack Hall—during its 2018 Homecoming festivities. Construction on the $24 million project formally broke ground on April 28, 2017, and was completed in time for the beginning of the 2018-2019 Academic Year in August.
Named in honor of Bob Mack ’64 and his wife, Tammie, Mack Hall is the second major construction project undertaken as part of the $100 million Forging the Future campaign. The five-year campaign is timed to culminate during the university’s bicentennial in 2019 and is intended to enhance the university’s strong position as it steps into its third century of service to the nation.
The new academic space features interactive classrooms; case-study spaces; pocket lounges; a high-tech cyber-security War Room; and a 400-seat auditorium and performing arts center to host plays and musical events, symposiums and lectures, panel discussions and collaborative interaction as well as the College of Graduate and Continuing Studies’ (CGCS) annual residency conference.
Mack Hall will allow CGCS to stay current with live event trends and expectations with its innovative spaces. Just like campus undergraduate students, Norwich’s online graduate students will be able to interact in a creative environment that inspires them and mimics what they would find in their daily work lives or a high profile professional conference. The new technology and features like the War Room will allow CGCS to create an impactful and professional looking residency experience and provide the tools to create unique sessions and workshops that can only be experienced during the week.

Now Available: Citizens & Soldiers: The First 200 Years of Norwich University
For 200 years, Norwich University has been educating citizen soldiers to lead, serve, defend, and build the republic, as both uniformed and civilian leaders. Here, for the first time, the 200-year legacy of this venerable institution is presented in a single volume, highlighting the tremendous contributions of Norwich-educated leaders to our military, our nation, and the world.
New York Times bestselling author Alex Kershaw brings Norwich's remarkable story to life in a beautifully written and illustrated book on the history and heritage of the nation’s oldest private military college titled Citizens & Soldiers: The First 200 Years of Norwich University. From its revolutionary beginnings to its rise to prominence on the world stage, the evolution of Norwich University closely parallels that of our nation. Captain Partridge’s mission to create “moral, patriotic, efficient, and useful citizens,” and his radical ideas about educating citizens and soldiers through an experience-based curriculum, have withstood the test of time. Through vivid storytelling, stirring photographs, and captivating illustrations, Kershaw’s Citizens & Soldiers captures the essence of the timeless Norwich ethos.
Kershaw visited the Norwich campus this year during Homecoming to celebrate the book’s release, and he caught up with senior Leah Cifuentes in the WNUB studios. Tune into this special, stand-alone episode of Norwich Odyssey for a glimpse into their conversation about what it means to know your history.
