Alex Kershaw, Author
With the 200th birthday of Norwich University just under a year away, a new book, Citizens & Soldiers: The First 200 Years of Norwich University by New York Times best-selling author Alex Kershaw, brings the story of the nation’s oldest private military college to life. Kershaw visited the Norwich campus this year during Homecoming to celebrate the book’s release, and he caught up with senior Leah Cifuentes in the WNUB studios. Tune into this special, stand-alone episode of Norwich Odyssey for a glimpse into their conversation about what it means to know your history.

The sounds of campus! The Norwich University carillon, one of only two such instruments in the state of Vermont, comprises 47 bells, the largest of which weighs 3500 pounds.

They discuss Dr. Alvi's book, The Political Economy and Islam: The Case of Tunisia. Following the 2011 Arab Spring, Tunisia’s civil society and political system have engaged in inclusive dialogues and negotiations. As a result, democratic transition processes have been nonviolent, hence providing the Middle East & North Africa (MENA) region with a positive example (or model) of post-revolution transformations.

On October 11, 2019, Sherri Goodman, Senior Fellow at the Wilson Center’s Environmental Change and Security Program and Polar Institute, gave a talk on “Climate and Security in an Era of Great Power Competition and Global Disruption.”
Goodman is credited with educating a generation of U.S. military and government officials about the nexus between climate change and national security, using her famous coinage, “threat multiplier,” to fundamentally reshape the national discourse on the topic.

The “Monuments Men and Women” of World War II provided a roadmap for cultural heritage protection in war, later codified in the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict. Despite efforts to improve training and security, loss of cultural property during armed conflicts has increased in recent years, partly because of intentional targeting by armed nonstate actors.

Col Michael E. Fossum, USAF (Ret.) and NASA Astronaut, gave a talk titled “Report from the International Space Station.” Fossum, a veteran of three space flights, has logged more than 193 days in space, including more than 48 hours of Extravehicular Activity in seven spacewalks.

US Army Lieutenant General Mark Bowman ’78 gave the College of Graduate and Continuing Studies Residency keynote address on Thursday, June 18 at 10:00 a.m. on “Leadership in the Digital Age.” LTG Bowman is the Director, Command, Control, Communications and Computers/Cyber & Chief Information Officer for the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

“Lessons in Leadership:” a cornerstone of a Norwich education. As one of the first U.S. Navy Female F-14 Tomcat Fighter Pilots, Carey Lohrenz also knows something about lessons in leadership. In June, she spoke on the subject as part of the Norwich University Todd Lecture Series. During her visit to the campus this summer, Lohrenz joined Crystal Drown in the WNUB studios.
