Cultural Competency in the Healthcare Industry

Abstract:

Understanding and implementing cultural competency in healthcare is an important tool in the fair treatment of all individuals. This paper focuses on the treatment of all individuals, particularly the Caucasian and Latino populations. It also explores the theories of high and low context as presented by Edward T. Hall. Understanding one’s context helps one understand why an individual acts the way they do, and understand the compliance rates of patients. This paper proposes ideas on how to obtain cultural competency through education, diversity training, mentoring, working together with open communication, and how to avoid assumptions and pre-conceived ideas.
