Success Of Intelligence Transportation System (ITS) At Central Artery Tunnel (CAT) project

Abstract:

The Integrated Project Control Systems (IPCS), later identified as Intelligence Transportation Systems (ITS), was particularly important to the section of Central Artery Tunnel (CA\T) commonly known as Boston’s Big Dig. This is a technology designed to ensure system efficiency and safety of field operations and public system users.

The success of ITS was due to exceptional project management delivered through the joint venture of the Bechtel/Parsons Brinckerhoff (B\PB) corporations, who led ITS designers to safeguard standards related to state highway design, the state police, and the Boston fire department.

This presentation provides a succinct knowledge of a feasible ITS life cycle planning for CA\T and similar projects. Largely, CA\T’s ITS goals were achieved, but the presentation points out that when developing large underground transportation facilities in 21st-century Architecture Engineering Construction (AEC), ITS can be greatly improved by incorporating Building Information Modeling (BIM).
