Abstract:

Bicycle sharing programs contribute to livable communities of the 21st century. The study illustrates how biking contributes to a livable community and describes the social, environmental, and economic benefits of biking and of bicycle sharing programs.

Developing a biking culture within the community is essential for the success of any bike share program. Bike share systems encourage short trips by bicycle and promote active transportation (any method of travel that is human-powered, generally walking and bicycling). Key components of a biking culture within a community are identified for a successful program. The study includes recommendations for the city of Eugene, OR, to consider in the establishment of a bike share program for the community.
