Abstract:

This article explores the organizational health of a centuries-old manufacturer of the finest astronomical-optical lenses, telescopes, and precision scientific instruments. Beginning in 1881, the company and its founder quickly secured a reputation for only shipping products that perfectly meet precise customer expectations. Applying Bradach’s 7-2 Model, the paper assesses alignment of the organization’s strategy, structure, systems, staffing, skills, style, and shared values to help uncover strategies needed for the organization to compete in today’s changing landscape.

Peering through the seven lenses reveals strong cultural beliefs tracing back to the founder that both impede potential survival on a worldwide scale and secure a tight bond among long-term employees to band together through dramatic ownership changes. The paper offers three recommendations to increase organizational alignment and health in the present world.
