New Entry for the I.K. Brunel Bridge Design Competition 2006 Rerun

Abstract:

Isambard Kingdom Brunel's Clifton Suspension Bridge, across the Avon Gorge in Bristol, England, stands as an iconic reminder of the genius of the engineer I.K. Brunel. But could it be improved today with modern materials and know-how? The Clifton Bridge has stood for more than 150 years, but it was designed for an era that had different needs. The New Civil Engineer magazine and the University of Bristol reissued the Clifton Crossing Competition 2006 - a rerun of the original 1831 competition. The challenge: can the 21st-century engineering mind improve upon Brunel's great 19th-century achievement? I have taken on that challenge and delivered a modern design bridge, project plan, etc., able to provide access and capacity for all vehicles as well as safe and secure pedestrian crossing.
