Success through Failure:

Union Counter-Irregular Warfare and the Defeat of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia
Author:
Michael Westermeier
Abstract:

It is the contention of this study that the mixed success of Union counter-irregular warfare operations in Tennessee, Kentucky, West Virginia, and Virginia actually served to weaken the Army of Northern Virginia and hasten the defeat of the Confederacy. The inadvertent creation of semi-controlled anarchy in the Union-occupied areas introduced yet another level of friction into Confederate General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia that led to rampant desertion, which in turn substantially contributed to Lee's defeat in 1865.
