Changing Minds in Changing Times:

The Irish Struggle
Author:
Timothy Jeter, Jr.
Abstract:

The struggle of Irish nationalism and loyalism has a long history. This work confines itself to studying what happened between 1975 and 1995 that convinced the Provisional Irish Republican Army (P-IRA) to agree to put down its arms. Though violence continues in the British Isles, it is a far cry from the bloody attacks of the past 40 to 50 years. What cultural and social ideas changed the mind of the P-IRA, an organization steeped in the tradition of Irish resistance and married to the ideal of a self-determining Ireland? This work seeks to uncover possible answers and solutions. Study of these reasons might lead to the discovery of key signposts marking the road of peace in other internal conflicts around the globe.
